Obama Kommer Inte Innebära Slutet För Övergreppens USA

När Obama kom till makten blev USA sig självt igen. Hans beslut att stänga Guantanamo ansågs vara beviset för detta, även om det är fascinerande att han måste försvara detta beslut. USA ska bli det USA det var innan Bush den andre kom till makten: ett land för demokrati, frihet och mänskliga rättigheter. Denna välrepeterade liberala lögn om ett USA som strävar efter det universellt goda har alltid haft en god kritiker i Noam Chomsky (avskydd av liberaler just därför: men avskydd även för att man har haft så förtvivlat svårt att beskriva var Chomsky har fel. Ibland har han utsatts för olika försök till karaktärsmord, alltid med samma klena resultat.) Noam Chomsky har med mycket tålamod och med en på sätt och vis träig stil med retfullt enkla små medel fortsatt visa på genom många exempel till varför USA inte är och aldrig har varit den idealbildsversion liberalerna har angett. USA:s övergrepp är många och väldokumenterade.

Efter lite mer än 100 dagar med Obama vid makten så är USA alltjämt en kapitalistisk stormakt som främst ser till den egna elitens intressen. Naturligtvis kan man inte förvänta sig alltför mycket: det har trots allt bara gått några månader, men utrikespolitiskt sett har förändringen framförallt varit en mjukare och liberalare retorik. Obama är mycket bättre på att flirta med den övriga världen än vad Bush var. Obama kommer att få sina onenightstands men för ett långvarigt förhållande behövs mer än charm, vackra men tomma ord och enstaka blommor.

När det gällde tortyren var det enkelt att skylla på en viss administration med som även Stephen M. Walt här påpekar:

... history also shows that prolonged occupations and counterinsurgencies always lead to significant abuses. It is the nature of the beast. This is what happened to Britain in the Boer War, Belgium in its central African empire, France in Indochina and Algeria, Russia in Afghanistan and Chechnya, Israel in Lebanon, Gaza, and the West Bank, and the United States in Iraq.
